Noam Chomsky has been a hero since I was in college, and I still think he's America's foremost intellectual. Reading Einstein on relativity is bit easier than reading Chomsky on linguistics--but check out his sociopolitical writings.

Lizzie West is the thinking woman's musician. Great voice, great songs and a really cool person.

Kansas City has the world's greatest bookstore, and it's not a corporate chain. I always go here first instead of the corporate stores.

This is a great blog, from a scholar/poet/artist/all around cool person with a brain in her head. If my sarcastic wit is too much for you, you'll like her better.

The Kansas International Film Festival is in it's 6th year. From controversial documentaries that will never play in a theater to new cutting edge independent features, this is a cool festival, and you wouldn't expect something like this in Kansas.

The Democrats should take a page from this book and get on the ball before it's too late.

Robert Greenwald is a classy documentary filmmaker. Serious stuff, important stuff. Buy the DVDs and show them on campus, in church basements, wherever people who are not stupid congregate.

Kelley Baker is a true independent filmmaker. The System won't accept him, so he goes around The System and gets the job done. You can order reasonably priced DVDs of his self-distributed movies. He does cool workshops too, and tells people things they don't want to hear but need to hear.

The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. It makes as much sense as the creationists in Kansas. More, actually.

You can listen to Democracy Now on the web site if you don't get the morning show. Another source for news that you won't see on TV.

You can buy an Evo Morales sweater for 50 bucks, and the coffee beans are second to none. If you don't know who Evo Morales is and why the Bushies hate him, spend some quality time with Google.

No explanation needed. Michael Moore--a true American patriot fighting for the working man.

All of Benjamin Meade's documentary films have an interesting point of view, from an academic look at American stag films, to a song-and-dance number with serial killer Bob Berdella, to how Corporate Fundamentalism is screwing with music and film.
